2010-2011 CUP FINALS

Davenport Millennium Trophy Final

5th April 2011
Halsall FC 4 -v- 4 Penlake FC
In a terrific contest for the Davenport Millennium Trophy
Halsall edged out Penlake in a penalty shoot out by
5 pens to 4 the game ended in a 4-4 draw after 120 minutes

Halsall took an early 2 goal lead thanks to James Garland and Alex Grisdale but Penlake fought back and reduced the arrears with a penalty by Andy Simm on 35 minutes

The second half kicked off with Halsall leading 2-1 but within 10 minutes of the re-start Penlake were ahead
thanks to strikes by Liam Highton and Greg Shelton

Both Clubs were playing attractive football but long throw expert Dave Abraham of Penlake caused
enormous problems for the Halsall defence

Penlake had a player sent off which resulted in a penalty for Halsall which was well saved by the
Penlake Keeper Adam Shelton

However Halsall were awarded a second penalty 3 minutes later and
Alex Grisdale made no mistake to level the score’s at 3-3

A second headed goal by Greg Shelton from a long throw by Dave Abraham
looked to have won it for Penlake at 4-3 with only 3 minutes left on the clock
but John 'Lloyd' Crosbie mustered one last effort for Halsall and equalised on 89 minutes.

There were no more goals in extra time and the penalty shoot out ended with Halsall scoring all 5 penalties
with Penlake missing one of theirs

A terrific match which nobody deserved to lose

Penlake’s consolation was that Nick Grindy was voted Man Of The Match

Under 18’s Cup Final

28th April 2011
Forefield Lions FC 2 -v- 0 Redgate Rovers FC
Forefield Lions won the under 18's cup final by 2 goals to nil against Redgate Rovers.

Forefields goals came in the 5th minute and the 85th minute but in between Redgate Rovers certainly had
the territorial advantage but its goals that count.

The opening goal came courtesy of James Taylor whose volley from 15 yards stunned Redgate.
The ball was only half cleared after a corner and Taylor pounced magnificently

Redgate fought hard but chances went begging, a break from defence in the 85th minute saw Steve Stoddern hit the winner after a good save from Redgate's keeper, the ball bounced back to Stoddern who stuck it in the back of the net
Chris Searle of Redgate Rovers was voted the Man of the Match

Youth Under 17's Cup Final

1st May 2011
Ashton Athletic FC 1-v- 3 Leigh Genesis Juniors FC

Leigh Genesis Juniors won the Under 17's cup final by beating Ashton Athletic 3-1
Chris Holt opened the scoring on 25 minutes after a through ball which he expertly tucked away for Leigh Genesis
The game was nip and tuck but a free kick by Ashton Athletic's Thomas Scot saw him equalise from
20 yards on 35 minutes

A free kick by Lewis Coleman from the touchline just inside Ashton's half was caught by the strong wind and
eluded the Ashton keeper and went over his head and into the net, the interval came without further scoring

In the second period Ashton Athletic came more into the game but Leigh Genesis always posed a threat and in the 85th minute the match was sealed by a bizarre own goal.

A strong shot was well saved by the Ashton Keeper and the rebound came to his own team mate whose attempted clearance struck another defender and bounced into the net

The Man of the Match award went to Leigh Genesis player Chris Holt

Bill Heyes Memorial Cup Final

3rd May 2011
A.F.C. Wigan FC 0 -v- 1 Knowsley South FC
Knowsley South completed a Cup & League double by beating A.F.C. Wigan by 1-0

Dispite territorial supremacy, Knowsley South couldn't find a way through a resolute Wigan defence
until the 70th minute when after some excellent aproach play, leading scorer and Man of the Match Matty Cushion hit what turned out to be the winning goal.

A.F.C. Wigan then took the game to Knowsley South but couldn't find a way through with Knowsley breaking out and hitting the cross-bar

This coming Sunday at Robin Park Arena, Knowsley South go for the treble in the final of the Houghton Cup against Highfield Grange 2.00pm kick off

Division Four Cup Final

Macmillan FC 4 -v- 6 St Cuthberts FC

St Cuthberts won the U - Spec Cup for Division 4 teams and did the double winning the
league with Macmillan runners up.

Ryan Plimley was voted the Man of the Match after scoring a hat-trick with Dale Hardman hitting a brace and
Ryan Molyneux heading home the last St Cuthberts goal.

Macmillan played some good football but were repelled, with Ian Ward outstanding in the Saints defence.
St Cuthberts took the lead on 35 minutes when Ryan Plimley slotted home from close range

The 2nd half rained goals, the first in this period was from a free kick by Dale Hardman after 52 minutes
which resulted in the Macmillan keeper being sent off for diliberate handball outside the area which
prevented a goal scoring chance and Hardman did the rest

Within 3 minutes Macmillan were level after Graham Todhunter struck home a penalty and then Dwayne Powell headed home a 2nd Macmillan goal

The Saints restored their lead when Ryan Plimley latched onto a through ball by James Demmings to
smash the ball into the net and go 3-2 in front
The game was nip & tuck but Hardman scored his 2nd goal to restore St Cuthberts 2 goal cushion.

Plimley's hat-trick goal followed on 72 minutes to make it 5 - 2 but Macmillan never gave up and
Ryan Nightingale reduced the deficit only for Ryan Molyneux to score for Saints and make it 6 - 3on
77 minutes with a fine headed goal.

Graham Tod hunter brought it back to 6 - 4 with his 2nd penalty on 80 minutes and Boris Armstrong the Saints keeper pulled off a tariffic save in the last couple of minutes to keep Macmillan out and finally the referee brought a brilliant final to a close

Houghton Memorial Cup Final

Highfield Grange FC 3 -v- 1 Knowsley South FC

Highfield Grange won the Houghton Memorial Cup Final with a 3-1 win against Knowsley South, in so doing they prevented Knowsley South from winning the treble as Knowsley South had won the Premier Division Championship and the Bill Heyes Memorial Cup for Premiership teams.

Highfield Grange started the strongest and took the lead on 10 minutes when a through ball by Martin Meehan saw Danny Murphy slot home and then on 35 minutes a terrific 25 yard strike by Martin Meehan gave
Highfield Grange a 2 goal cushion to take into the interval.

In the 2nd period Jamie Harrison the Man of the Match was pulling the strings for Highfield Grange in midfield
On 63 minutes Danny Murphy scored his 2nd goal when he capitalised on a mistake from the Knowsley keeper

In the 70th minute Chris Macabe pulled a goal back for Knowlsey but dispite more pressure couldn't breech the
Highfield Grange defence again

Whitley FC 1 -v- 1 Wigan Cosmos FC
Whitley won on penalties

After a game of few chances, and each club had hit the crossbar, Whitley took the lead on 74 minutes
when a free kick was headed home by Dean Smith

Then Wigan Cosmos took up the running and with just 5 minutes remaining Paul Vandenburg smashed home
the equaliser to take the game into extra time both clubs threw everything at their opponents
but neither could break the defence

In the penalty shoot-out Whitley's 2nd penalty was saved and Wigan Cosmos going for victory had their 5th penalty saved and with Whitley converting their 5th penalty the shoot-out went to sudden death

Cosmos's 3rd penalty in sudden death was hit over the cross-bar and Whitley's was converted much to the
delight of Whitley's players and management

Wigan Cosmos had consolation as their player Adam Pendlebury was voted Man of the Match

Adam Morris Memorial Cup Final

A.F.C. Wigan Reserves FC 1-v-2 Westhoughton Town FC

The final was well contested by both sides playing some excellent football

Adam Morris was a goalkeeper who was playing for A.F.C. Wigan in a league match against Digmoor when he collapsed and died earlier in the season and the league have dedicated this final in his honour.

His team mates gave their all to win the match but it wasn't to be
Craig Farnworth put Westhoughton Town ahead when he ran on to a through ball and scored
from 15 yards after 20 minutes

Wigan tried their best to equalise and had a header cleared off the line and other chances went begging

A superb solo goal just after the interval by Craig Farnworth put Westhoughton Town 2 - 0 ahead
A.F.C. Wigan rolled up their sleeves and deservedly got a goal back on 65 minutes when a neat move ended
with Nigel Cooper slotting home into the bottom corner

Neither side scored again but there were numerous chances at both ends and the match was played in a tremendous spirit a credit to both sides

Graig Farnworth was voted the Man of the Match for his 2 goals and his all round general play

Appley Bridge FC 2 -v- 2 Forefield Lions FC

Forefield Lions won 3-2 in a penalty shoot out.

Forefield Lions of the under 18's division took the Wilf Hickson Memorial Cup Final Trophy in a thrilling game from
Appley Bridge from the under 17's division

Forefield started well and were a goal up after 7 minutes when a perfect cross was headed home by James Taylor
After a 2nd headed goal also by James Taylor on 25 minutes it looked as though Forefield Lions were home and dry

However Appley Bridge's keeper Craig Watson and centre back Nathan Bennett with some great saves and last ditch tackles kept the Bridge in with a chance

In the 2nd half a finely struck free kick by Joe Green on 56 minutes eluded everybody and
Appley Bridge were back in the game
Two minutes later and Appley Bridge were level a cross by James Connor saw Brandon Heppenstall score
his first goal for the club to complete a tremendous fight back

The game was nip and tuck with both sides having chances but there were no further goals in the
remaining minutes of the 2nd half or extra time

Forefield Lions took the Trophy after a 3-2 penalty shoot out win

The Man of the Match Trophy went to the Bridge's keeper Craig Watson who made a few top class saves and also scored in the penalty shoot out
